Strength, balance and expression

What is acrobatic gymnastics?

A team discipline that brings together acrobatics, gymnastics and choreography.

Skills created as a team

Acrobatic gymnastics is performed in partnerships. International competition includes women's, men's and mixed pairs, women's groups of three and men's groups of four. Gymnasts combine partner balances and dynamic skills with choreography set to music.

Each gymnast has a role suited to the skill and their individual strengths. Communication and trust are every bit as important as strength, flexibility and coordination.

From first steps to competition

You can take part for enjoyment or train for competition. Competitive routines receive scores for difficulty, execution and artistry, with deductions where applicable. Balance routines focus on holds and controlled positions; dynamic routines feature flight and catches. Combined routines include both types of elements. Requirements depend on the age group and competition level.
